However, the first episode of the campaign is…annoying. Instead of the tedious William Wallace tutorial from II, they do at least have two tutorial modes: one short mode where you get shown the basic game and one short map with changing objectives.
But compared to the historical campaigns in II, the concept is a little dull. The campaign is theoretically interesting, the story of the Black family throughout the centuries, and it has the Knights Hospitaller, who are pretty cool.
I didn’t really take the time to get to know it…but then, I also got extremely frustrated by the first level on the campaign. I feel that this game suffered quite badly from the fact that I played Age of Empires II right beforehand. It very much has that mid-2000s graphics quality to it, but they did actually do some pretty cool innovation with the way buildings fell down, so I suppose there’s that. Six years after the huge success of Age of Empires II, Age of Empires III built on the engine from the supremely weird but kind of fun Age of Mythology to create a sequel to its groundbreaking predecessor.
